Roxbury Latin depends upon the generous support from parents, alumni, and friends of the school, which helps cover the more than $29,100 gap between tuition and the cost of educating each boy.

Annual Fund

Tuition alone does not cover the full cost of educating a boy at Roxbury Latin; it never has. In fact, for this 2023-2024 school year, tuition accounts for about 40 percent of the school’s budget, with the remainder provided through income from contributions to the Annual Fund (22 percent) and from the endowment (38 percent). This year, the total budgeted cost per student is $68,420, which is $29,170 more than RL’s tuition of $39,250. Essentially every boy at Roxbury Latin receives a scholarship. Like all other independent schools, Roxbury Latin relies on the philanthropic support from parents, alumni, and friends to cover this “gap” between tuition and the real cost of educating each boy.

Long-term, appreciated securities used as a gift offer significant tax benefits to the donor. In addition to exemption from federal capital gains tax, securities owned for more than one year provide the donor with a charitable income tax deduction for federal income tax purposes equal to the securities’ market value (on the date of their receipt by the school) for up to 30 percent of the donor’s adjusted gross income.

The easiest method of donating stock is through the electronic transfer system. Here you will find instructions for making a stock gift.

  • Donor Advised Funds

Making a gift through your Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is easy. Simply contact your sponsoring financial or community institution and recommend that a grant be made to The Roxbury Latin School.

What is a Donor Advised Fund?

A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) is a named charitable giving account you can set up under a public charity, most often a sponsoring financial or community institution. To set up a DAF, you make an irrevocable gift of cash or other assets to the financial or community institution, receive a full tax deduction at the time of your gift, and may then make non-binding grant recommendations to benefit qualifying organizations, such as Roxbury Latin.

    Recognition

Gifts made through a DAF are recognized under the donor’s name in our Annual Report and donor listings. Because a full tax deduction is received at the time of establishing the DAF, donors do not receive an additional tax benefit.

  • IRA

If you are 70½ years old or older, you can take advantage of a simple way to give to Roxbury Latin and receive tax benefits in return. You can give any amount up to $100,000 per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charity without having to pay income taxes on the money. This gift option is commonly called the IRA charitable rollover, but it is also referred to as a qualified charitable distribution (QCD). You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.

Note: While the new SECURE Act has raised the age to 72 for Required Minimum Distributions, donors may still make QCD gifts after they turn 70½.

  • Matching Gifts

Many employers sponsor matching gift programs and will match any charitable contributions made by their employees. You can find out whether your company offers a matching gift program by visiting this site and entering your employer’s name.
