Head of School’s Welcome
Founded in 1645, Roxbury Latin is not only the oldest school in continuous existence in North America, it is also the oldest boys’ school on the continent. For all of our 380 years we have offered a program explicitly designed for the students in our care. Our work has been steady and sure, and our boys have flourished. Of RL’s singular qualities, however, none contributes more powerfully to the life of our school than the background and nature of our boys. Whether you are already familiar with Roxbury Latin or new to our community, I invite you to learn more about us.
Advising Program
At Roxbury Latin, we promise each boy will be known and loved, and the one-on-one advisor tradition most effectively ensures this goal. In the school’s formal guidance system, every student has an official faculty or staff advisor. The faculty advisor’s role is pastoral. The advisor seeks to understand the total life picture of his or her advisee: the boy’s goals and values, his home and family life, his relationships with others in the school community, and his commitment to and involvement in the curricular and extracurricular life of the school. The advisor listens, counsels, and encourages—and even rebukes in appropriate doses. What we hope for—and what almost always happens—is that each boy will form close, informal relationships with a number of faculty members. Many of our graduates speak of such friendships, along with relationships forged with classmates, as their single most important and valuable experience at Roxbury Latin.
