Our goal is for students to be accomplished generalists—to experience the enrichment and delight that arise from creative involvement and participation.

Drama Productions at Roxbury Latin

The Roxbury Latin Dramatics department stages three faculty-directed productions each year. Some years also features a student-directed production.:

  • Senior Play: Open to boys in Classes I-III (with girls from neighboring schools)
  • Junior Play: Open to boys in Classes IV-VI (with girls from neighboring schools)
  • Musical / Classical Play (alternating each year): Produced jointly with The Winsor School, usually open to boys in Classes I-IV
  • Student Production: In some years, based on interest and ability, a senior will initiate and direct a full-length production in the spring.

The centerpiece of the Roxbury Latin dramatics program is the 300-seat Robert P. and Salua J.A. Smith Theater, a well-appointed facility with unobstructed sight lines, fly and trap capabilities, an optional orchestra pit and excellent acoustics for student voices. All onstage roles and most of the technical work—set design and construction, lighting, and sound—in all productions are performed by students.

In 2020-2021 the Senior Play, Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 by Anna Deavere Smith—rehearsed both in-person and on Zoom due to COVID-19 restrictions— involved 21 Roxbury Latin boys and 11 girls from The Winsor School. The production was then filmed on the Smith Theater stage and streamed to both the RL and Winsor communities near and far! The Canterbury Tales, the Junior Play, rehearsed in the winter and was also videotaped and then streamed to the RL community-at-large. In the year prior, RL presented productions of A Few Good Men by Aaron Sorkin as the Senior Play, as well as Disney’s Newsies as the all-school winter musical. With plans to return to a more normal schedule of extracurricular activities in the coming school year, we plan on mounting a musical in the winter of 2022. While there was no student-directed production during the 2020-2021 school year, we have high hopes of returning to that tradition—always a hit with students—in the spring of 2021-2022.

  • Frankenstein: November 19 & 20, 2021

As this fall’s Senior Play, Roxbury Latin will present Nick Dear’s adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic tale Frankenstein. Featuring students in Class I through Class III, the Senior Play will take the Smith Theater stage on Friday, November 19, and Saturday, November 20 at 7:30 p.m.

  • Catch Me If You Can: February 25 & 26, 2022

This year’s Winter Musical will be a production of the Broadway hit-comedy Catch Me If You Can by Terrence McNally. Involving students across all grades, the Winter Musical will take to the Smith Theater stage on Friday, February 25, and Saturday, February 26, at 7:30 p.m.

  • Chalk Is Cheap: May 6 & 7, 2022

This spring’s Junior Play—featuring students in Class VI through Class IV—will be an original screenplay written by Associate Headmaster Mike Pojman. Originally written and intended as part of the school’s 375th anniversary celebration, Chalk Is Cheap is a comedy based on the life and characters of The Roxbury Latin School over many years. The production was disrupted by COVID in spring 2020, and we’re glad to bring it to the Smith Theater stage on Friday, May 6, and Saturday, May 7, at 7:30 p.m.
