Tutorials
The Tutorial program allows boys in Class I (senior class) to pursue academic interests not included in the School’s regular course offerings in lieu of a regular course for credit. A teacher who shares a boy’s specific interest must be willing to work with him. The student and his faculty tutor then plan a course of study and propose coursework to the Director of Studies and the Curriculum Committee. If they approve the proposal, the tutorial becomes the boy’s fifth major course.
A tutorial in the student’s special interest requires the boy to assume more responsibility for his own learning than does a normal course.
A tutorial in the student’s special interest requires the boy to assume more responsibility for his own learning than does a normal course, and exceptional commitment and rigor are expected.
Subjects of tutorials approved in recent years include: Classical and Modern Philosophy, Creative Writing, The Iliad and Dante’s Inferno, The 20-Century Novel, Eastern Religious Thought, Molecular Biology, Differential Equations, and Basics of Psychology.
The Tutorial program also allows members of Class I to pursue advanced study at nearby colleges and universities.
