Social Service: A Core Value

In keeping with our core value of public service, students participate in School-wide, class-by-class, and individual service programs.

Each class selects community service representatives who coordinate projects and are involved in School-wide fund raising efforts.

The following are School-wide community service projects:

  • Maru a Pula School in Garabone, Botswana. The boys’ efforts raised $6,000 for the tuition of an AIDS-orphan student.
  • Medicines for Humanity (MFH). Several fund-raising activities benefit this nonprofit founded by an alumnus. During spring break, six students accompanied by two adults volunteered to assist a new MFH program in Jamaica, where they dug the foundation for a new clinic.
  • Habitat for Humanity International.
  • Boston-area Projects. Classes V and VI worked on trail maintenance with Boston Urban Wilds and assisted at the Brookwood Community Farm harvest. Musicians performed special shows for our elderly neighbors at the Deutsches Altenheim. Many boys also participate in social service activities through their churches, synagogues, and community organizations.
  • In-house Service Opportunities. Classes V and VI planted 1,000 spring bulbs on campus. Class I boys serve as big brothers to new boys, and many boys choose service work for their five-week Independent Senior Projects. Older boys tutor younger boys through our extensive in-house program, and more than 100 boys serve as admission tour guides.
