Halls

Assemblies in Rousmaniere Hall, where the School community gathers to hear presentations by students, teachers, and visiting speakers, are traditionally called "halls."

"In Hall," as we say at Roxbury Latin, the Headmaster addresses the community on issues that matter in the life of the School, guest speakers present their own insights on world and national affairs, and students give musical performances or declamations in Greek and Latin. Varsity athletic teams are introduced in Hall each season, plays are previewed, individual accomplishments are presented, service projects are initiated, and prayers are offered.

Assemblies, where the School community gathers to hear presentations by students, teachers, and visiting speakers, are traditionally called "halls."

On Founder’s Day, Exelauno Day, Cum Laude Day, at the opening of the terms, on Prize Day, and at the Closing Exercises the School community hears Holy Scripture (sometimes in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek), sings hymns, and prays together in Latin.

Invited Hall speakers are prominent leaders in business, religion, the arts, and social service. Recent speakers have included Dr. Susan Hockfield, President of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), actress Kate Burton, and the Reverend Peter J. Gomes, Plummer Professor of Christian Morals and Pusey Minister in the Memorial Church at Harvard University.

The F. Washington Jarvis International Fund has sponsored distinguished Hall speakers: economist Paul Volcker, career diplomat Ambassador Richard Murphy ’47, and Linda Fasulo, the UN Correspondent for NBC News and MSNBC.
