Athletics

At Roxbury Latin, we adhere to the classical precept mens sana in corpore sano and believe that physical and mental fitness go hand in hand. Our program teaches boys good sportsmanship and the fundamental skills and strategies necessary to compete in interscholastic athletic contests. Boys learn to work and sacrifice cooperatively and to step outside their personal ambition to serve the greater good. Our athletes are smart and well coached, mostly by full-time faculty, and they compete hard.

Younger boys (in Grades 7-9) are required to participate in athletics for two seasons; older boys have the option of varsity or junior varsity team play or an independent physical education program of their choice. Forty-two of the 49 members of the Class of 2007 earned at least one varsity letter during their school careers.

Our teams have enjoyed considerable success in the Independent School League (ISL). In 2006–07, the teams’ combined record was 256-148-18, and the baseball team won the ISL Championship. Fifth baseball finished with an 11-1 record and junior cross-country placed second out of 20 schools at its own invitational meet.

In 2006, the cross-country team won the New England Division III Championship, and in 2004–05 and in 2005–06 the varsity track and field team won the New England Division III Track and Field Championship.
