Inaugural Southard Memorial match celebrates RL son

RL wrestlers won the inaugural Matthew C. Southard Memorial Match at the tri-meet against Noble & Greenough and Middlesex on Friday evening, January 28.

Matt, a beloved member of the Class of 1999 who passed away on June 9, 2009, wrestled for RL while his brother Steve wrestled for Nobles. "There has always been an RL/Nobles family connection," said Coach Steve Ward. "Both boys were terrific wrestlers, captains, and wonderful kids."

At a memorial service for Matt last spring, Coach Ward and Noble & Greenough coach Steve Toubman discussed the establishment of an annual match in Matt's memory. "We decided on the RL/Nobles/MX tri-meet, with the winner getting to keep the trophy for the year." RL won the inaugural event, beating Nobles 54-15 and Middlesex 78-6. The trophy celebrates Matt’s devotion, work ethic, and sportsmanship.
